We report a case of scarlet fever developing in a 23-year-old pregnant woman. She had been menstruating regularly until the 20th week of pregnancy when she noticed a small papule on the left side of her chin. The papule evolved into a large vesicular lesion, which was diagnosed as a case of scarlet fever by bacterial culture. The bacterial agent isolated was Streptococcus pyogenes. In early pregnancy, scarlet fever has been reported to be associated with premature rupture of membranes, fetal loss and poor outcome. Our patient presented none of these complications. The 2018 Fair Work Commission has released its much-anticipated decision on the longstanding National Minimum Wage issues in Victoria and South Australia. Whilst the decision is a victory for many, for businesses and the average worker, it’s unclear what form it will take in real terms and what the long-term implications will be. We will reprise the report for all three states later today but for now, we wanted to take a quick snapshot of the National Minimum Wage aspects of the decision in Victoria and South Australia, as well as the implications in Qld. How much does the decision change Victoria’s rate of the National Minimum Wage? The decision will introduce a new rate of $14.84/hour in Victoria for full-time workers, with the hourly rate increasing to $15.38/hour by October 2019. This represents a $0.44/hour increase over Victoria’s current rate. The rate is similar to the current $15/hour rate in South Australia, with the exception of the childcare subsidy which will be increased from $2.20/hour to $3.10/hour as of June 1. What does it mean for businesses? There have been multiple media reports that the decision will mean Victoria and South Australia will push ahead with legislating a lower rate than the Federal Government’s proposed rate, which currently stands at $18.29/hour. These reports are incorrect. The decision will not result in the decision of employers or employees in Victoria or South Australia to pay National Minimum Wage rates less than the rates proposed by the Federal Government, as the rates proposed in this decision will be set at a rate higher than what was previously adopted in both states. In fact, the decision will actually be a step up 82138339de
